House is sorted, it is very much a student house, but big and nice enough.
I am having an 'I hate my course' moment at the moment. Hoping it is just because I am not used to being back at universty, but I shall wait and see. I got a 1st on one of my essays which was pleasing but still didn't spur me onto loving it. Anyway......
MUSIC POST! Some of my favourite things at the moment:
1) Jenny Lewis And The Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat
Jenny Lewis, lead singer of Rilo Kiley, a sporadically brilliant band releases her first album of solo material, backed up by the Watson Twins who offer some sweet harmonies. Where Rilo Kiley are quite inconsistent, this is a whole album of very beautiful, acoustic alt. country. The highlight has to be "Handle With Care", apparently a cover of a country classic, but just ace since it has not only Jenny Lewis' fantastic pretty vocals, but also Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) and Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes). Lovely indeed.
2) Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender
You know that advert about the blackout in New York with some bint singing in quite a weird voice 'SVETLANA.....SUCKS LEMONS....'? Well that is Joanna Newsom. My housemate Beth had been creaming her pants over her before christmas, so I thought I'd check her out. Once you get used to the childlike and unusual voice, it's actually quite a conventional album of acoustic pop songs, be it played on harpsichord or harp. Hard to explain without listening, but very rewarding.
3) The Cribs - New Fellas
Not sure if the Cribs are taking off all over the country or not, but everyone in Leeds is a bit ob about them since they are from Wakefield and do 'secret' gigs about every fortnight in one place or another. Tuneful and bouncy and poppy but fairly unconventional indie. Good for a dance though, and you gotta laugh as all the scenesters groove along to 'Hey Scenesters!' whilst looking smug and thinking that they aren't scenesters at all.
4) Mary J Blige & U2 - One
Featured as a bonus track on her latest album 'The Breakthrough', this is an absolutley stunning live version of one of the best songs ever. Regardless of whether or not you like R&B and soul, it's undeniable that Mary J has one of the best voices in the business. She makes 'One' sound possibly more epic than it's ever been, with her fantastically soulful voice. Add in a bit of Bono on vocals too and you're onto a winner. |
