Music I Am Enjoying At The Moment

1. Madonna - Let It Will Be (Paper Faces Mix)
-Stuart Price, under his Paper Faces guise (AKA Thin White Duke etc. etc. etc. we've been through this before) remixes a song he produced.  One of his harder mixes, all crunchy synths and heavy beats, rather than his usual more euphoric style.  Still ace electro at the end of the day though.

2. MC Lars - Download This Song
-MC Lars has released his first major(ish) label record this week, and this is the opening track.  Sampling Iggy Pop's 'I Am A Passenger' (always a good thing) he puts trademark electronic beats over the top, and then raps comedically in a white-boy American accent to produce his tried-and-tested 'Post-punk-laptop-rap' sound.  Well done.

3. Ugly Duckling - Yudee
-Ugly Duckling, one of my favourite hip-hop acts ever are back! This pleases me.  They say 'Who you came to see?', we say 'Yuuuuudeeeeeee!'.  Using mainly an organ for the instrumental was also a stroke of genius.  Ooo...boy does this one make me cream.

 4. Miss Kittin - Live At Sonar
-Gotta love Miss Kittin.  This mix CD from Sonar 2005 is ace.  Largely composed of pretty minimal techy house/electro with her heavily accented French/German accented singing/speaking over the top, this is minimal at it's best.  Throwing in Windowlicker (One of my all time favourite songs ever), and then building up to The MFA's 'The Difference It Makes', one of the fuzziest most beatuiful pieces of dance from last year, this is one hell of a party.

5. Dj Copy's Diva Mixtape
-This very limited mixtape which I don't own (grrr....) but have a few tracks from basically takes classic slices of R&B, circa 93-97, and then layers pretty, sad and beatiful lo-tech electronica over the top of them.  Exactly the sort of the thing that will turn up on the file-sharing networks though I hope.  The version of Mariah Carey's 'Emotion' is immense.

If anyone is interested in hearing any of this stuff, I'll upload them to a file-hosting website and post the link.

The South Park 'Tom Cruise won't come out of the closet' scene.  Classic.

House is sorted, it is very much a student house, but big and nice enough.

I am having an 'I hate my course' moment at the moment.  Hoping it is just because I am not used to being back at universty, but I shall wait and see.  I got a 1st on one of my essays which was pleasing but still didn't spur me onto loving it.  Anyway......

MUSIC POST!  Some of my favourite things at the moment:

1) Jenny Lewis And The Watson Twins - Rabbit Fur Coat

Jenny Lewis, lead singer of Rilo Kiley, a sporadically brilliant band releases her first album of solo material, backed up by the Watson Twins who offer some sweet harmonies.  Where Rilo Kiley are quite inconsistent, this is a whole album of very beautiful, acoustic alt. country.  The highlight has to be "Handle With Care", apparently a cover of a country classic, but just ace since it has not only Jenny Lewis' fantastic pretty vocals, but also Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie) and Conor Oberst (AKA Bright Eyes).  Lovely indeed.

2) Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender

You know that advert about the blackout in New York with some bint singing in quite a weird voice 'SVETLANA.....SUCKS LEMONS....'?  Well that is Joanna Newsom.  My housemate Beth had been creaming her pants over her before christmas, so I thought I'd check her out.  Once you get used to the childlike and unusual voice, it's actually quite a conventional album of acoustic pop songs, be it played on harpsichord or harp.  Hard to explain without listening, but very rewarding.

3) The Cribs - New Fellas

Not sure if the Cribs are taking off all over the country or not, but everyone in Leeds is a bit ob about them since they are from Wakefield and do 'secret' gigs about every fortnight in one place or another.  Tuneful and bouncy and poppy but fairly unconventional indie.  Good for a dance though, and you gotta laugh as all the scenesters groove along to 'Hey Scenesters!' whilst looking smug and thinking that they aren't scenesters at all.

4) Mary J Blige & U2 - One

Featured as a bonus track on her latest album 'The Breakthrough', this is an absolutley stunning live version of one of the best songs ever.  Regardless of whether or not you like R&B and soul, it's undeniable that Mary J has one of the best voices in the business.  She makes 'One' sound possibly more epic than it's ever been, with her fantastically soulful voice.  Add in a bit of Bono on vocals too and you're onto a winner.
